Workplace Burnout Report - 2023
John Chan's mission is to transform work into a place that empower individuals to realise their whole potential, enabling them to take care of what’s important to them both at and outside of work. A strong advocate for ethical data driven cultures, John uses data analytics to uncover insights that inform strategic action, driving change to prepare individuals and organisations for the future of work.
We have invited him back to talk about the results of this year's 'The State of Burnout Report'
We talk about:
- The rates of burnout are increasing for women, but decreasing for men
- But having caring responsibilities is not a contributing factor to experiencing burnout.
- The comparison between those working in a time-reduced work model (i.e., 32 hrs) vs a more standard model (40+ hrs).
- Reasonably positive results for the time-reduced work model, but is reducing work time the reason for these positive results or the work they've done to get there?
- The link between burnout and loneliness
- And why we re not doing all we can to reduce that loneliness by coming out of our houses to join in with our communities.
Putting the HUMAN into HR
Martyn Redstone has always been fascinated by technology and geeks out over the newest tech, and will jump into the metaverse and have a 2-hour conversation with Alexa.
However, how humans interact with and use technology interests Martyn, that's why he fell in love with chatbots and conversational ai. What better way is there to interact with technology than chat? It's the most intuitive way to interact.
Martyn helps TA and People Leaders navigate the conversational and generative AI world.
Our major theme through this conversation was humanising tech to create a great human experience.
We had a brilliant conversation about:
- Job displacement is real and;
- Job creation is real
- Why our young children are more likely to be managing AI agents than people when they join the workforce
- Why HR should be leading the change and the future of work and be the changemaker
- People vs machines - what we need to think about in the future of work
- Chatbots - why are we not embracing them and how can they improve candidate experience
- Why there is no shortcut to good human experiences
- What are the future problems we are facing and how we can get investment to deliver what we need.

I pledge never to recruit a unicorn…

Exploding TA with AI
In this episode, we chat to Marrin-Boyd Andrews, the one-time DJ and now Global Talent Sourcing Manager at one of the world's FMCG leaders.
We chat about how the remit and perception of sourcing has changed over time (still a way to go!), learn about what Generative AI features Marrin-Boyd is using in his tech stack today and explore what conditions are required to enable a progressive and forward-thinking Talent Function (or company for that matter!)
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML): AI and ML algorithms are transforming the way sourcing is conducted.
These technologies enable automated candidate screening, resume parsing, and matching, significantly reducing manual effort and improving the accuracy of candidate selection. AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants also enhance candidate engagement and provide personalised experiences.
Marrin-Boyd (MBA) is experimenting and trialling many ideas with AI, Data Analytics and Predictive Modeling, Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Automation and Robotics Process Automation.
MBA has turned his role into a strategic part of Talent Acquisition, where he partners with TA and HR on critical and future skills and identifies internal talent for opportunities.
Join us as we discuss how MBA is leveraging these technologies, what has worked, what is the Talent industry doing, what the future can be and will we all still have jobs?
There's too many choices! Assessing and buying tech
Tech is a great enabler and multiplier of effort.
No matter what part of the economic cycle, businesses are always looking to create efficiencies and increase productivity. The challenge for many organisations lies in selecting the right tech for their situation and level of maturity. Choosing the wrong tech can be costly and time-consuming and negatively impact your credibility.
In this episode of The A-Z of Talent, Andrea and ZiChuan talk to RefApp's co-owner David Näsström and discuss the challenges of buying and "being bought".
People often think that the onus is on the buyer to make the right decision, "caveat emptor". But the match between problem and solution isn't just the buyer's responsibility. Press the play button to listen and learn more!

Startups, Job Boards and Business Cases.... oh my!
Josh Snow had an idea that he thought would transform the way we recruit using job boards. He was not a TA professional, indeed he was a finance guy but had worked a lot with TA. He also recruited a lot and decided to pursue that idea...
So, why did a Head of Finance at a major telco suddenly think "I want to do a TA Tech startup".
Josh shares with us his idea, where it worked and where it failed. He also shares some brilliant insights into being a hiring manager and how he worked as 'the finance guy' for the TA team and helped them build business cases for change with hard evidence and what you need to think about if you are planning a start up.

Geofencing - what is it?
Also known as 'employerfencing'. So what is it? It's something that many companies with workforces across multiple locations often have as part of their kit but have you also considered it to increase diversity or to brand yourself in the market in a sector you are not known for?
Join us as we talk with Jemma Jones, Senior Account Director and David Hoath, Commercial Director - Australia and New Zealand as they take us through some amazing case studies in healthcare, a recent Australian campaign looking for mechanical engineers and finishing off with how they created a campaign to improve the diversity of the City of London policeforce.
